An infection is the colonization of the host organism by a foreign species. In infection, the infecting organism seeks to utilize the resources of the host to multiply, usually to the detriment of the host. The infected organism, or pathogen, interferes with the normal functioning of the host and can lead to chronic wounds, gangrene, loss of the infected limb, and even death. The host response to infection is inflammation.
